CLAIRE GILLIES - Vice President, Marketing -Bell Mobility & Virgin Mobile
As Vice President of Marketing for Bell Mobility and Virgin Mobile, Claire Gillies is responsible for creating and executing the marketing strategies for Canada’s top performing wireless brands. Over the past 15 years, Ms. Gillies has established herself as a proven leader in the fast paced wireless industry, shaping programs for both the B2B and B2C segments.
During her time at Bell, Ms. Gillies has played a key role in the transformation of Mobility with her leadership for countless new product and service introductions, such as the Apple iPhone & iPad, Bell’s HSPA network launch, and many business solutions including an affinity program. She has also launched Bell services in new markets and in new distribution channels including The Source and is driving Mobility’s marketing technology investments.
Allister Field has served with the Ontario Securities Commission for the past eight years in the Enforcement Branch and is currently the manager of the enforcement support team. Previously Allister served with the Toronto Police Service for 22 years in a variety of uniform and investigative roles, ten of those years as a Fraud Investigator.
Christine Allum works in Investor Office at the Ontario Securities Commission to deliver investment education to help Ontarians protect their money and better manage their finances. Prior to this, she worked for a non-profit organization and managed a financial literacy program which included delivering teacher training and resource development.
OSC staff travel across the province to help investors make better financial decisions. The presentation includes the red flags of fraud, common types of fraud, how to work with your advisor and where to find unbiased information.
In 2015, the OSC surveyed 1500 Canadians (50 and older) about their financial concerns leading up to and during retirement. Fraud was one of the concerns identified. Approximately 60 out of every 1,000 older Canadians are affected by fraud. This compares to 6 out of 1,000 for home burglaries in a given year. We also know that fraud is an under-reported crime.
Bell Pensioners' Group (BPG) was formed in 1995 by a group of Bell pensioners who were concerned about their RRSP savings after the collapse of The Confederation Life Insurance Company in August 1994. Following the successful negotiation of an Enhancement Agreement with Bell Canada that guaranteed appropriate financial compensation upon liquidation of Confederation Life, BPG continues to advocate on behalf of pensioners' rights. So in 2015 we celebrated the 20th Anniversary at our Annual General Meeting on May 6th recognizing many of the founding members. Thanks to those we joined us on this occasion at Willowdale Baptist Church 20 Olive Ave. in North York close to the Yonge subway.
This chapter was formerly called the Toronto Chapter but in recognition that we serve members from Niagara to Kenora it was decided to change the name to better reflect our membership. BPG members are free to join the chapter that is most convenient for them and since retirees and current empoyees are quite mobile just let us know if another chapter is more convenient and we can transfer your membership. All the Ontario chapters have overlapping membership along our “borders” however we do share information about meetings in other chapters.
Where our members live
The majority of our chapters 3400 members live in the Greater Toronto area however our membership stretches from Niagara Falls up to Kenora and we have about 60 members spread over all provinces except Quebec and Saskatchewan. We also have 23 members located in various countries including USA, Australia, Finland, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and Thailand. We serve members with our 4 newsletters each year and with our website, email and voice mailbox so we are able to communicate and help members resolve problems or provide the necessary contacts in a number of different ways.
Our primary focus is the protection of our Bell "Defined Benefit" Pension and Benefits but we do get a lot of questions about a wide range of issues outside of our mandate and we do try to help. So while the majority of our members will never be able to attend a meeting, given our vast geography, they recognize the valuable work of BPG and that the strength of our voice is in the size of our membership.
Our Members are key to our survival
As a member, you are our main source of recruiting new members as we have very limited means for recruiting new members even though we place ads in every issue of Intouch. We rely on our members to ensure that their friends and former colleagues are members of BPG. In 2013 we changed our “rules” about who can become a member of BPG and so now both retirees and active members as well as those on a deferred pension who are part of the Defined Benefit Pension plan can become members of BPG.
Help us Grow
As membership in the Bell Pensioners Group grows, we increase our ability to influence outcomes relative to our Bell "Defined Benefit" Pension and Benefits. The more Bell retirees and active employees that we represent, the more influence we hold in protecting these valuable assets to your life.
Are there new Bell retirees in your circle of friends or social groups? Do they know about BPG. It is one of the best kept secrets in the Bell community and they may not have heard about us. Please invite them to join or contact your Area Rep or a member of your Chapter Committee and we'll ensure they receive a warm welcome.
