(Longevity risk arises from increased pension plan costs when pensioners live longer than expected.). Under the new longevity insurance agreement, the Bell Canada pension plan pays monthly premiums to Sun Life and, in exchange, Sun Life makes monthly pension payments into the plan for the lifetime of existing DB pensioners (~40 years). The net difference between the monthly payments made by both parties is relatively small. BCE maintains full responsibility for the Bell pension plan and related payments to pensioners. Notably, the Bell/Sun Life longevity insurance agreement doesn’t change anything for Bell’s DB pensioners who will continue to receive the same pension payments each month from Bell. information you have read or seen in the press however,

Although we also believe that the situation is under control, we understand that some of you may be concerned about this situation. Therefore, we are informing you and currently preparing more detailed communication to be posted on the national page of our website. We believe that the hack only leaked the email and contact information for a few members who had recent transactions by internet. We emphasize at no time was any credit card information available for hackers as it is not ever on the BPG website since it is communicated directly from members via the PayPal settlement system. Please be assured that we do not store any member information on our website. We believe that a flaw in our temporary storage of information for members who over the last few days were signing up, renewing or updating their personal information left a vulnerability which we have identified and corrected. Some members who are active Bell employees may also be contacted by Bell to advise them of this security breach also as a precaution. This action in itself created some alarm that the call itself may have been an attempt at fraud given members heightened awareness of suspicious communication.

Every day, businesses make decisions: expand or retract, rent or buy, fix purchase prices or take their chances on the open market. For better or worse, once they’ve made decisions, and signed contracts, they’re locked in. Our laws and law courts make it so – and with good reason. If businesses could walk away from their contractual obligations, chaos would rein, and our economy would literally collapse.
Unfortunately, there appears to be one notable exception to this rule. When it comes to employees and their pensions, businesses have been all too ready to walk away from pension commitments, and out courts have been all too willing to let them.
