Feature Article - Alice Gould: A
She made sure we were all fed and caffeinated, and did so with the precision of a military general and the smile of an angel.
Alice is one of the founding members of BPG. She has only ever missed one AGM and worked behind the scenes from the very start - among other things: helping the Meeting Coordinator with refreshments and venue changes; and, in the old days, manually preparing the distribution of the Newsletter to thousands of Ontario Central (then, Toronto and Area) members. Under Alice, we moved to healthier and tastier sandwiches (from Tim-bits).
But impressive as this all is, Alice takes the greatest pride in having recruited a great many of the earliest BPG members. She retired in 1993 from Outside Plant Engineering, and lived through those troubling days which resulted in the creation of the Bell Pensioners’ Group. She was determined to do what she could to make a difference. In those days before email and the Internet, she reached out to her extensive contacts and attended non BPG gatherings, taking opportunities for recruitment. She became, and remained, the face of BPG in Oshawa.
Alice’s spirit of volunteerism went far beyond BPG. She is the President of the Oshawa Chapter of the Pioneers’ group. She also does Chaplaincy service at her local hospital, is very active at her church, and, wait for this … she even volunteers for social events in Arizona where she and her husband spend their Winters!
Thank you, thank you for your relentless work and for your optimism, Alice. You have been an inspiration.
