Our current focus with the federal government is on pushing for changes to the rules that govern bankruptcy and insolvency, to better protect pensioners. We don't need another Nortel or another Sears to demonstrate that changes need to be made. Unfortunately, the Trudeau Liberals have, to date, shown no interest in reviewing the bankruptcy and insolvency rules.
As you know, BPG is a founding member of the Canadian Federation of Pensioners (CFP). The CFP, CARP (formerly the Canadian Association of Retired Persons) and the Canadian Labour Congress are joining forces in a Day of Action to hand deliver our message (attached) to Liberal MPs across the country. We are focussing on Liberal MPs because they form a majority government; to be successful we need their support.
We are asking that you consider making time to join others to deliver this message. Specifically, we are planning to gather at the MPs’ constituency offices in an effort to keep the issue top of mind with the MPs. We know this approach works. Just recently doctors, lawyers, small business owners and other professionals launched a successful campaign to roll back proposed income tax changes. Their campaign was very visible, very loud and it worked. In addition, MPs have told us that we need to keep the pressure on them and the government.
Our counterparts at CARP have volunteered to coordinate the activity. If you are in a Liberal held riding, or would be willing to travel to a nearby Liberal riding, please click on this link to show your interest in helping out. A riding lead will be appointed to coordinate the activity in each riding and will be in touch with you with specific details for your riding.
For each Liberal MP, we will establish a specific time to meet on February 21 to deliver our message. If the MP cannot meet on the 21st, we will aim for a meeting on an alternative day in that week. If the MP is unavailable that week, we will establish a time to deliver the letter to the constituency office on the 21st.
We have momentum now; it is critical that we keep it going by ensuring our message continues to be heard.
